Planning a workation to India might be intimidating if you’re travelling from abroad. Let’s face it; it’s a huge country, and each of its 28 states and 8 union territories is different, so it can be difficult to know where to even begin looking. We enjoyed every location we visited on our first 6-month workstation across India, and we’ve put together a list of our favourites here, however, if there’s one place we’d recommend for first-timers, it’s Goa. And if there’s one place in Goa we recommend staying and working in, it’s aColmeia.

With two Goa locations, Casa Amber and Residencia Cardosa, aColmeia is a bustling hive of activity. It was created as a home for digital nomads around the world to connect, work and migrate to; just like bees. In fact, the Portuguese word aColmeia actually translates to ‘the hive’ in English, and people who stay at aColmeia are referred to as bees, because, according to their website, “humans, just like bees, depend on one another for survival and growth.” When you join the hive, you join a community of remote workers and like-minded people, so it’s a great opportunity to get started as a digital nomad.

During our stay at Casa Amber, we had all the modern conveniences a digital nomad working remotely abroad needs; reliable wifi, desks and chairs in our air-conditioned room, a dedicated upstairs workspace, a decent-sized clean kitchen, filtered water facilities, a downstairs chill area and even a pool.

But the staff at aColmeia go even further to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Founder Dhruv visited us regularly for games nights, introduced us to the best local restaurants in the area and even organised a scooter for us to rent for the entire month at a very affordable price.

Community manager Mehak also went above and beyond to ensure we could experience Goa to the fullest while working remotely, organising a trip into the jungle to a fenni (a cashew fruit-based alcohol) distillery, and regularly hosting movie nights in the chillout area.

Overall, aColmeia is an ideal location to begin your digital nomad journey in India. You are exposed to Goan culture and a relaxed way of living all while spending time with a great bunch of people who will no doubt inspire you on your next project.

If you’re looking for somewhere a little more off the beaten track, head deep into the Himalayas and discover our 5 favourite places to work as a digital nomad in Leh, Ladakh.
